Minutes of October 17 meeting
Minutes of September 19 were read and approved.
No new business
CIC Conference News – Conference on self-employment, was not run due to lack
of registration. Reasons given for inability to send staff included other events
and lack of resources on the part of agencies asked. We may run this conference
in future. The CIC thanks the conference committee for their dedication over the
last year.
CIC Goals – A discussion of our proposed planning session included inviting
champions of our community as well as a venue for the event, and possible buy in
through the S.W.E.D. group.
Stories Project – We have received a few more stories though we are
having some technical difficulty getting these up on the website. This should be
cleared up in the New Year.
CIC Associate Projects – The Employment Outcomes Project is looking to have
their executive summary put on the CIC website as well as information on
ordering outcomes information. This will be up soon and available for
downloading.
Website Developments – Showcase, the CIC self-employment
area is now linked to the stories area. Talk of borrowing a digital camera so
that pictures of people and products as well as a description of businesses
could be put up on the showcase. Other ideas included the possibility of the CIC
marketing a CD of “People’s Voices”. This will be followed up for next meeting.
Online Discussion was spoken about and the issues involved. Suggestion that
instant messaging could be utilized to help with this. Online meetings are now a
possibility. Buy in from agencies would be necessary. Suggestion was made that
every other meeting be virtual in future.
Community Events/Issues – community Living St. Marys is holding an info
session on such topics as employment insurance, and changes to ODSP income
support. Please contact them for further information.
NEADS Conference – The National Educational Association of Disabled Students
has a conference-taking place from November 8 to 10 2002. It will be held at
Delta Ottawa Hotel (361 Queen Street, Ottawa) and is titled “Opening Doors To

Minutes of
September 19 meeting
1. Minutes of June 13 were read and approved.
2. No new business
3. Much sharing of information regarding programs and businesses dealing with
people developing their own businesses. Various members suggested specific
speakers and possible panelists.
Tim gave an update on conference committee dealings: the advance flyer and
information contained therein as well as asking for feedback on a brochure that
is to go out in October.
4. CIC goals – The membership discussed the need for a goal setting day
and whom we would involve. It was resolved that spring of 2003 (May) would be a
good time for this “Vision Day”. Lorelei, Blair and Tim volunteered for this
task and will remain in contact.
5. Stories Project – Stories have been sent by a group of people taking a
literacy class. Some stories are very heartening. We plan to put stories in the
news section of the website; archiving these and making it possible to down load
them. When enough stories are collected they will be grouped and formatted for
publication on the website.
6. CIC Website happenings – The webmaster continues to send updates to
all that have given e-mail addresses. This includes any changes such as minutes
and agenda. Please send any feedback to the CIC website at
www.communityinvolvement.org
7. CIC Associate Projects - Are We Doing What We Say We Are Doing – This
group is following up on requests for their review process.
Employment Outcomes Project – The June meeting spoke of presentations to
be made locally and at the ministry level explaining EOP and it’s benefits to
our community. Funding was also an issue and EOP was working on a formal
proposal for funding along with the CIC and Are We Doing…
8. Community Events/Issues – A TEA ( The Employment Alliance) brochure
was introduced and TEA information discussed. A flyer for “Voices” a program in
Huron and Perth Counties looking to collect and produce a book of peoples’
stories was distributed. Blair shared news of a St. Marys group, which is a
joint
effort between the local high school and the St. Marys Association. They have
received funding from “It Takes a Village” and will be working with youth
surrounding issues such as leadership, connection and civil responsibility. The
youth will create a play.
The Lifeskill Centre in London is having an open house October 9 between the
hours of 2 and 5.
Ingersoll Support Services is celebrating their 25 anniversary October 6 . John
Davidson will be the speaker and the event will be head at the Elmhurst Inn in

Minutes of
June 13, 2002
1. Minutes of
April 18 meeting were read and approved.
2. New business
– CIC meetings to be held at a reduced frequency in future. The thinking is that
more members will consistently be able to make meetings on this reduced
frequency, as this will place less of a burden on their respective agencies.
Meetings are to be held in the months of September, November, January,
February, April and June (though these may change due to project necessities).
Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at the James Purdue Centre
in St. Marys Ontario. The time of our meetings is 9:30 A.M.
“Online”(meetings over the web) meetings may be possible within the year. Tim
will update CIC member’s list including e mail addresses as a first step in this
process.
3. Report on
CIC conference “Exploring the Misunderstood Option: Supported
Volunteerism”
Feedback received from participants at the conference was favorable, with the
format, speakers and dialogs all receiving high marks.
The workshop (held at the end of the day) tying up the day’s events showed a
high level of understanding on the part of the participants (results of the
workshop follow the minutes).
4. CIC goals
– we have received recommendations in the areas of further website development,
training/education through conferences and projects such as the stories project
and networking.
A discussion ensued of the direction of the CIC driving force and that this
should
remain within the organization. All agreed, however we do want to remain
flexible as to the needs of the community
There was a suggestion of a CIC planning session in September to include
possible other community groups. This session is could have a workshop format
and include a needs assessment.
5. Stories
Project – Stories continue to be sent in at a slow pace. A few were
generated due to talk of the project at the CIC conference. It has been
recommended that we not advertise this project at conferences or organizations
other than our own as the climate is not right for this at the time. We will
continue to advertise the project on our website and through links with other
sites.
6. CIC
Website Happenings – Our website received somewhat of a setback of late as
our webmaster Bob (Knievel) Vansickle has been recovering from an accident. I
understand that he is feeling much better and will be back to work soon.
7. CIC
Associate Projects – “Are We Doing” – This group held its consolidation
training exercise on May 23. It was well attended and included further training
on
the “Are we Doing” assessment to handle more specific issues surrounding the
training as done by trainers in the community
8. Tetra, an
organization providing engineering expertise to devise innovative
methods of helping handicapped persons become more independent, has had a
project in the news of late. See Ingrid Claren for details.
“Party in Paradise” is being held at the Galleria mall in London on June 15 as
part of AIDS Walk London.
St. Marys is holding a fundraiser as part of its Heritage Festival on July 13 .

3. Report on upcoming conference “Exploring the Misunderstood Option: Supported
Voluntarism”
Stephanie discussed meeting with the three individuals on the supported
individuals panel. All expressed great excitement and are looking forward to
attending.
Persons for manager’s panel are also set to go.
Currently there are 25 people registered for the conference. The advertisement
for the conference goes into the LAVA supplement of the London Free Press this
weekend. Our flyer has been re-faxed to agencies as a reminder. Greg suggested
phone calls to various agencies. Tim to do.
Over 200 flyers were sent out through various mailing lists.
4. Stories Project
Flyers on project are now available and we will distribute them at our
conference.
As well as stories people could send short video clips or audio pieces.
Suggestion made that we open our scope to allow those stories from people
anywhere in the world as our website is a world-wide medium
5. Website Happenings
A few things are in the works here. Online meetings are planned for the end of
this year as well as open chat lines, discussion groups and updates sent to
people who have provided their e-mail addresses.
Suggestions here have included expanding on committees through people on the
website as well as a daily update section. Some suggestions for discussion on
daily site could include how people are dealing with OPSEU strike and how others
are dealing with ODSP issues.
Other suggestions included the possibility of a membership fee to raise funds
making the website self sufficient, and organizing site so that the most current
material is more up front. We realize that this will require daily maintenance.
Website accessibility was discussed. This will become a must. Suggestions were
made as to possible check sites for accessibility.
Annie talked about the possibility of a joint project with something her agency
is doing for her newsletter. “Website for the people”.
Another suggestion was to look into doing fundraisers for agencies on our
website.
6. CIC Associate Projects
- Employment Outcomes Project final report is completed. Participating agencies
should be receiving a copy within the next week. EOP is now in the process of
analyzing data and comparing it to the last two years. Greg will update at the
next meeting. Data shows that persons with mental health concerns are
under-serviced.
Within the next month EOP will be looking into last years data and will be able
to identify funders and compare numbers, outcomes and funds available (example;
ODSP, breaking the numbers down to where funding is coming from in order to use
this information for future planning.
May have a new customer service form coming out so as to include all (example:
March of Dimes) will be able to provide data now where as before it wouldn’t
fit).
Joe Dale can now e-mail EOP evaluation forms and they can be returned in the
same fashion.
ODSP forms have changed to include S.T.E.P. This will show the advantage of
earning more money.
- Are We Doing
What We Say We Are Doing is holding a consolidation meting to pull together
skills and receive feedback. This will take place on May 23 at the Festival Inn
in Stratford Ontario. Flyers have been sent out advertising this event.
- Middlesex Community Living – Jeff told us of the “Mayor’s Breakfast” being
held in Strathroy on May 15 between 7:30 and 9:00 A.M.
- MCL’s woodworking shop has now hired a supported individual to be a sales
representative and has been approaching local businesses to carry products.
- Tillsonburg and District ACL – Tillsonburg is opening a golf course with two
accessible holes.
- Bud’s update on the Ministry – Ministry now has a new name the Ministry of
Social Services and Children. Dianne Elliot is the new minister. The previous
minister is without portfolio.

COMMUNITY
INVOLVEMENT COUNCIL

Minutes of
March 28, 2002
1. Last
meeting’s minutes were read and approved.
2. New Business. Discussion regarding the CIC’s future role and reviewing our
mandate. This was thought to be a good topic for our May meeting. The
membership felt that, at this time, issues such as the upcoming conference would
be settled and we would have the month of April to plan and announce this issue.
Further suggestion would involve including “community updates” on our agenda.
This would include good news, issues and concerns at the agency level, or in the
community in general. It was thought that this was a missing part of our meeting
and something, which had been done in the past in order to identify gaps, and
areas in which the council might become involved. CIC projects and associates
could be included in this heading.
3. Report on upcoming conference “Exploring the Misunderstood Option:
Supported Voluntarism” – Stephanie and Tim reported that the conference
brochure had been completed and sent to agencies as well as distributed through
attending speakers and posted on the CIC website.
Other conference updates include the confirmation of speakers/presenters,
possible copies of Lava supplement to the London Free Press to give out at the
conference (as Volunteer week coincides with the conference), and an area for
dissemination of related material ( London Voluntary Sector, Hutton house and
others are interested in this). Conference would appear to be on track for April
25th
4. Stories Project – News of website promotion and short term plans to
devise flyers, on both the existing publications and new project “Listen Hear”.
These would be distributed at our upcoming conference as well as possible
distribution at other conferences. Flyer on existing publications would describe
titles and benefits as well as include an order form. The flyer for the upcoming
project would be attached and talk to who would want to submit stories as well
as reasons for continuation of the project, benefits to authors as well as
reader and the community at large.
Due to financial considerations, suggestions have been made that this
publication be made available to download on the website and that hardcopy
versions would be available for promotion only.
A discussion of promotion of the project and the possibility of gathering
support
from other funding sources ensued. Recommendations for promotion of our new
project included the possibility of contacting People First at the provincial
level as well as Youth Involvement Ontario. It was felt that these groups would
allow for wide distribution of our message. Also the suggestion that a deadline
be set for submission of stories to be included in the publication.
5. CIC
Website News – New website areas: Self-Employment Showcase, Stories
promotion area and the virtual member’s area are up and gathering interest.
People providing e-mail addresses are receiving updates on CIC as well as
associated happenings. This continues to be an exciting time for our website as
it continues to promote our projects as well as gathering community interest.
Updates and changes have been happening on a weekly basis to mirror project
growth. Ideas for new areas are in the design stage as well. Watch for new
updates or send your e-mail address in order to receive updates as they happen.
6. Are We Doing… This group’s training manual has been revised and
updated to reflect needs of the larger community A workshop was held on March 20
and 21 in Stratford Ontaro. The workshop was seen by the Are We Doing… group as
being quite successful. They received positive feedback on participant
evaluation forms. Twenty-three persons participated from various services and
the group received twelve other inquiries. As well, a couple of requests, to do
training, have been received from other areas.
Are We Doing… is planning a one-day workshop on “consolidation”, in May,
resulting from requests and recommendations from previous participants.
7. Employment Outcomes Project (EOP) – Much concern regarding support for
EOP projects was noted. It was felt that support would continue given news from
reliable sources.
Student employment issue paper was discussed and finality was sought in order to
distribute. Discussion regarding next year’s satisfaction survey and how various
funders needs might be addressed.

3. Conference Report - An advance flyer has been mailed telling of conference
topic, date, and where the conference will be held. The advertisement for the
Lava (London and Area Association for Volunteer Administration) supplement to
the London Free Press has been prepared and sent in. A schedule of events was
reviewed and will be included in the brochure to be sent out in March. A
discussion ensued regarding the emphasis now placed on supported voluntarism and
concerns that precepts will be people oriented (John O Brien’s theories were
spoken about) and that people are served over programs. Pat
suggested that an area on the conference feedback form be dedicated to
participant views on what supported voluntarism entails. Definitions’ of
supported voluntarism were discussed and Tim offered to bring in a couple, he
had come across, for the next meeting.
4. Stories Project – Members were encouraged to spread the word regarding
the new stories project publication. Stories can be sent to timm@alicesaddy.on.ca
. Topics for stories could include challenges faced/overcome, accomplishments,
poems, volunteerism, formulation of own business, etc. It was emphasized that
with this send in format word
of mouth transmission of the project was important. Possible committee to be
formed to brainstorm methods of marketing project.
5. CIC Website – The website has received many encouraging comments from
people of late. Noted that people commenting were not just from our area, but
from as far afield as Newfoundland and the Southern States. People who have
provided e-mail addresses are now receiving updates from the site including
minutes, links, new projects and any changes to the website. Showcase – people
with own businesses are beginning to send pictures and descriptions of same to
be included in the Showcase area on the website. All are encouraged to seek out
those who have a service or a product to sell and have these
people contact the website with pictures, business cards and a description of
the business.
Tim can be contacted to help with this. As a connection with the new stories
project, people availing themselves of this area are encouraged to write a story
of the formation their business as a connection to the stories project.
6. Are We Doing… – This group is holding a training event March20 and 21
in Stratford Ontario. They are promoting team training for evaluations. This
will be the third such event and the first in this area.
7. EOP (Employment Outcomes Project) – This group meets tomorrow. They
will have outcomes of surveys distributed before March end. The peer review
process is to be incorporated for evaluations in future.

4. Stories Project – Barb Leavitt was consulted on past Stories Project
publications. She provided insight into motivation for a new publication,
possible methods of collecting stories and the offer of continued support for
this project. Tim plans to meet with CIC webmaster Bob Vansickle to discuss
methods of promoting the submission of stories through the website. The Alliance
in London is interested in a similar project and a tie in is expected there as
well. Please direct any persons’ interested in writing their story to contact

5. CIC website – CIC information is now being transmitted, to people (who
provided their addresses at the last conference and through the guest book), via
e mail . This information includes agenda, minutes, conference flyers and any
website changes. The CIC plans to update a list of members including e mail
addresses this spring. The section of the website dedicated to persons who own
their own businesses is in the planning stages. This “Showcase” will contain a
picture of the product, business card or the person’s picture as well as a
description of products or services. Please visit the website for developments
in this area.
6. EOP Update – The Employment Outcomes Project met to discuss issues
including changes that would need to be made to the existing client satisfaction
survey in order to reflect information needed by agencies and funders including
MCSS –ODSP. A review of the peer support process by Greg showed the need for
cooperation between EOP and “Are We Doing What We Say We Are Doing”. Talk also
of upcoming presentations to MCSS Regional Office, DS & ODSP corporate as well
possible presentations to ORWC and CARP. Next steps include a committee to
develop a new client satisfaction survey.
